Position Focus:
This position involves supervising a CLIA-approved, genetic-testing laboratory. Responsibilities include leading a team of clerical and technical (C&T) and administrative staff to produce and analyze high quality data sufficient for patient reporting, maintaining standards and documents required by the accrediting agency College of American Pathologists (CAP), continuously updating and improving technical procedures. Periodic review of regulatory readiness for maintenance of compliance and preparation for inspection by CAP and the State of CT. Acting as a liaison for the Yale Center for Genome Analysis for clinical regulatory compliance. This position requires familiarity with medical billing and HIPAA privacy laws. Responsibilities include day-to-day supervision of the DNA Diagnostics Laboratory; training, supervision, and continuing education of C&T technical staff; conducting performance reviews; supervising routine quality control (QC) of equipment and laboratory reagents and maintaining documentation of QC; updating and improving technical procedures; sample tracking and organizing the workflow of the laboratory; assuring adequate technical quality of laboratory results and performing preliminary analysis. Other responsibilities include responding to phone inquiries from referring health care providers regarding tests offered by the lab and progress of testing on samples in the lab; performing preliminary bioinformatics analyses on sequence data and other duties as assigned.


Essential Duties:
1. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority. 2. Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning 3. Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly. 4. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports. 5. Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning. 6. Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory. 7. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Ability to conduct PCR, Southern Blotting.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Knowledge of Sanger sequencing, Whole exome sequencing.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to perform bioinformatic analysis of exome sequence data.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Familiarity with medical billing and HIPPA.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Excellent oral and written communications skills to work collaboratively with internal/external teams.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Master's degree in biology, biochemistry, or a related scientific discipline and one year of experience in a molecular diagnostic clinical laboratory; or Bachelor's Degree in biology, biochemistry or a related scientific discipline and three years of experience in a CLIA certified molecular diagnostics clinical laboratory.
